Position: Public Affairs Communications & Marketing Intern Supervisor: Katrina Barker, Communications & Marketing Coordinator

Time Commitment: 10-20 hrs/week, depending on schedule

Time Frame: May-August 2017 

Position Overview: The Public Affairs Communications & Marketing intern will assist the Public Affairs Team in administrative duties, social media posting, graphic design, and other general duties as needed. The public affairs intern will support VAN and Community Engagement Interns as needed.

This position is for those interested in gaining experience in non-profit communications (marketing, public relations, and design), event planning, and campaigns & electoral work. The candidate will be supported in effectively communicating messages around reproductive health to support the mission and advocacy work of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and Planned Parenthood Action Council of Utah.

To promote success in the position, interns will receive training in a variety of areas, including: social media management; graphic design; public relations; advocacy & organizing; political messaging; community outreach; and on-going professional development opportunities tailored to the intern’s interests and goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Contribute to and support work of the Public Affairs team including communications and marketing, advocacy, community engagement by providing administrative and dynamic assistance.

  • Complete Volunteer training
  • Support communications and marketing as directed by the Communications and Marketing Coordinator.
  • Provide legislative and electoral support, through task management and administrative assistance.
  • Support volunteer coordination including event planning and volunteer engagement and recruitment.
  • Participate in program evaluations and feedback discussions
  • Data entry
  • Scheduling and staffing information/advocacy tables and distribute reproductive health care information as needed
  • Contribute to Intern responsibilities and work-plan
  • Attend any pertinent training at Planned Parenthood Association of Utah to learn how to effectively communicate to different groups about reproductive health care and rights
  • Assist staff with special projects on as-needed basis
  • Document completed hours & events on a weekly basis
  • Attend weekly Public Affairs staff meetings
  • Weekly supervision


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to confidentiality, honesty, and ethics
  • Computer experience — MS Word, social media, Adobe Creative suite a plus
  • Ability to initiate and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Experience working in collaboration with other individuals and community organizations helpful
  • Commitment to the mission/philosophy of Planned Parenthood
  • Knowledge of reproductive health, PPAU services and political issues around reproductive health rights is a plus
  • Ability to work between 10 and 20 hours a week (flexible based on intern’s schedule)
