Deseret News 2017 Winter/Spring and Summer Student Internships

The Deseret News in currently looking to fill seasonal internships for the 2017 Winter/Spring and Summer semesters in the following departments:
Mormon Times & Features: News and information for and about members of the LDS Church, plus general-interest arts, entertainment, lifestyle and family issues. Work includes writing and managing online content. Full or part-time internships.
Church News (an official publication of the LDS Church): news and information for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Full-time internships only.

National: In-depth news and information for a national audience of people of all faiths. Write and sculpt long-form enterprise stories and short-form aggregated news analysis on one of six core issues: Family, Faith, Education, Media, Money or Care for the Poor. See national.deseretnews.com. Full-time internships only.

News Division: Unique integrated newsroom for Deseret News, KSL-TV and KSL Radio. Reporting on various issues, including schools, politics, communities, police, courts, human services and general news stories. Writing for Deseret News, deseretnews.com and KSL.com with occasional opportunities available for broadcast reporting. Full-time internships only.

The pay rate is $10 an hour for both full and part-time internships. Most internships are full-time (40 hours a week); some 16 to 24-hour part-time internships may be available with the Mormon Times & Features department and may include flexibility to work around class schedules.

Internships typically start for Winter/Spring semester in January and end in April. Internships for Summer semester typically start in April/May and end in August. (All in conjuction with school semesters). A minimum of 12 weeks is expected. Interns will work with their supervising editors to determine exact starting and ending dates, and weekly work schedules. If time off during the semester is needed, that must be coordinated well in advance with the supervising editor.

Internship requirements:

  • College sophomore or older
  • B grade-point average or higher
  • Complete an exercise that includes copy-editing test, current events quiz and writing exercise. This exercise will be given at the time of the interview or emailed to you ahead of time.
  • Have a car to travel to assignments, and a have a phone number where you can be contacted during the internship.

If hired, you must provide documentation to Human Resources that you are legally authorized to work in the United States.
