PURPOSES

The LDS Church History Library is seeking a candidate for an internship opportunity, working with processing archivists in arranging and describing records related to the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members. We are looking for an advanced degree student or recent college graduate with career goals in the field of archival studies.

This is a paid internship, which is anticipated to last through the end of 2017. This position is a full-time (40 hours per week) hourly, nonexempt position. The candidate must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from (within the last 12 months), an undergraduate- or graduate-degree program

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Process digital, photographic, and paper archival records acquired by the Church History Department
  • Directed reading: Church history, Professional literature related to archives and manuscripts
  • Practicum
    • Process newly acquired archival collections
    • Create bibliographic records using Aleph integrated library system and MARC21 bibliographic records
    • Create registers using our register editing and rendering tool
    • Mentor and train volunteers (missionaries) in various tasks
    • Assist in preparing archival records for digital preservation
    • Provide reference assistance to patrons in the Church History Library

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in history or allied field, and Master’s degree in archival administration, library science or history (earned or in process)
  • Understanding of archival arrangement and description principles
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Highly detail-oriented with excellent writing and editing skills
  • Good communication skills and ability to thrive in a team environment
  • Respect for confidentiality
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel

Preference will be given to candidates who also possess these additional qualities:

  • Experience in the field of digital archives
  • Experience conducting research and/or working in an archives, including arranging and describing archival collections
  • Knowledge of the historiography and sources of LDS Church History

Available to work 40 hours per week, during regular working hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

WORTHINESS QUALIFICATION

Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.
