Historical Research, part-time, Paid Intern for 6 months


Department: Family History Department

PURPOSES

The mission of this position is to help Church members fulfill their divinely appointed responsibility to discover their families through family history methods, submit their names to the temple for saving ordinances, and to help bring souls unto Christ.

This Internship will be focused on gathering and editing historical timelines for populous cities worldwide.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Gather content from sources identified by supervisor.

Edit for content and brevity.

Prioritize most relevant data as directed by supervisor.

Transfer acquired data into final fields.

QUALIFICATIONS

Paid interns are qualified while enrolled in an educational institution and for one year following graduation. They must sign a Paid Internship Engagement Letter.

Student in History, English, Journalism, or related field. Ability to analyze and prioritize large quantities of data. Ability to work quickly alone and in a group.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word. SQL experience a plus.

Knowledge of multiple languages a plus.

 

Indexing Intern

PURPOSES

Assist the Online Services team of the Church History Library to index articles in Church magazines and other periodicals containing Latter-day Saint content.  This is an exciting and unique opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in libraries, archives, history research or other related fields.  We are looking for a motivated, energetic, and production oriented individual to join our team.

This paid internship, which is anticipated to last one year (12 months), is a part-time (approximately 28 hours per week), hourly, nonexempt position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will learn the application of MARC standards in the practice of subject indexing of articles in periodicals. He or she may also assist with reference questions from Library patrons. The intern will work under the direction of and will receive training and day-to-day guidance from senior-level Church History Specialists.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and education:

  • Currently enrolled in, or graduated within the last 12 months from, an undergraduate or graduate program in history, library science, family history, archival studies, English, or other information or research related field
  • Aptitude for detailed cataloging processes and able to work cooperatively in team settings
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Good research skills
  • Good understanding of basic computer software, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to quickly learn to use specialized cataloging software
  • High level of typing accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly read and discern the essential topical elements of articles and compose useful summaries and keyword lists
  • Good planning, organizational and time management skills

DESIRED:

  • Interest in pursuing a career in a library or archives setting
  • Familiarity with MARC records and cataloging standards

Must be available to work 28 hours per week, during regular working hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday at the Church History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

 

Paid Intern – Quality Services Part-Time Temporary

PURPOSES

This intern will have the opportunity to work on commercial keying and other projects with the Quality Services team, with an emphasis on German language projects. Their contributions will improve our ability to provide quality records to the patrons of FamilySearch as they search for their ancestors. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to see how principles and practices learned in their educational institutions can be applied to a fast-paced, results-oriented work setting.

This position is primarily for educational or religious purposes, and should be used to enhance personal and professional experiences for the Intern. Under general supervision, the Intern performs work as assigned by the department.

Location: Downtown Salt Lake City (Church Headquarters)

Position will be part-time (28 hours a week or less) for up to one year

Pay:  $14-16 per hour; no benefits

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze data and images and report quality outcomes
  • Create new or improve existing analysis tools
  • Assist in the creation and writing of new documentation, and have responsibilities in the organization and organizing and maintenance of a document library.
  • Create and distribute weekly and monthly department reports

QUALIFICATIONS

Paid Interns are qualified while enrolled in an educational institution, and for one year following graduation.  They must sign a Paid Internship Engagement Letter.

  • Intern should be currently seeking a bachelor’s or master’s degree in language arts (including English), family history, statistics, economics, IT/IS, or a related field or have obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the listed fields within the past 12 months.
  • Excellent data analysis and organizational skills.
  • Skilled in the use of Excel and Word software programs. A knowledge of XML, HTML or other programming is desired.
  • The ability to read, transcribe, and evaluate hand-written documents in a non-native language, especially German, is preferred.
  • Experience with FamilySearch indexing is preferred, but is not required.

 

WORTHINESS QUALIFICATION

Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.
