The Modern Language Association is offering several summer 2019 internships at their headquarters in New York. Each comes with a generous stipend. Apply by March 15th to be considered.

Communications and Outreach Intern

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a communications and outreach intern for summer 2019 to assist with communications, social media, and marketing tasks for the MLA’s wide range of outreach and social media programming.

Reporting principally to the MLA’s head of communications, the communications and outreach intern will assist staff members in the office of outreach with social media management, content creation (including promotional copy and content related to the MLA archives), landing-page optimization, list development and maintenance, and data analysis. The communications and outreach intern will also perform related work as needed, as well as participate in conversations about communications and marketing strategy.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills and be comfortable working with Microsoft Office and common social media platforms, such as FacebookTwitter, and LinkedIn. The preferred candidate would have some knowledge of graphic design using one or more of the more common graphic design programs, such as Adobe PhotoshopInDesign, or Illustrator. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in the humanities and nonprofit communications and marketing.

The fund-raising and communications intern will also help drive engagement on social media and in blog posts and will participate in conversations about fund-raising and communications strategy.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills and be comfortable working with Microsoft Office and conducting online research. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in the humanities and nonprofit communications and marketing.

Convention Engagement Intern

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a convention engagement intern for summer 2019 to assist with the use of MLA Commons, Humanities Commons, and CORE for attendee engagement around the MLA Annual Convention and other MLA event programming.

Reporting principally to the MLA’s head of convention programs, but working alongside the project manager for digital initiatives, the intern will assist staff members with creating and seeding Commons groups related to the convention, symposium, and forums. The intern will also perform related work as needed, as well as participate in conversations about event-planning and promotional strategy.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, research, and writing skills and be comfortable working with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel. Experience with WordPress, online community engagement, or digital library infrastructure preferred. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in the humanities and nonprofit meeting planning.

Bibliographic Database Intern

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks an intern for summer 2019 to assist with research, testing, and administrative tasks relating to the MLA International Bibliography, the leading database for research in world languages and literatures, linguistics, film, folklore, and writing studies.

Reporting principally to the editor of the MLA International Bibliography, the intern will search for and update information on publishers, journals, and authors; analyze and update MLA bibliographic data; and assist with usability and error testing on library platforms. The intern will also perform related work as needed and participate in conversations about indexing, and metadata management.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills and be comfortable working with Microsoft Office. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in languages, literature, the humanities, or library and information studies.

Indexer Intern, MLA International Bibliography

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks an intern for summer 2019 to assist with indexing, editing, and proofreading tasks related to production of the MLA International Bibliography, the premier database for research in world languages and literatures, linguistics, film, folklore, and writing studies.

Reporting principally to the editor of the MLA International Bibliography, the indexer intern will be trained to index scholarly publications in fields covered by the bibliography and to assist in maintaining records on periodical coverage. The indexer intern will also perform related work as needed and participate in conversations about indexing and metadata management.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills and have reading knowledge of at least one language other than English. Particular attention will be paid to candidates who are enrolled in or have completed an advanced degree in languages, literature, the humanities, or library and information science.
