| The National Gallery of Art is offering a pre-program internship in the painting conservation department for an individual with an interest in pursuing a career in conservation. The position offers the opportunity to gain experience in paintings conservation with the possibility of working with other conservation departments, including object, textile, photograph, and paper conservation. The intern will also experience what it is like to work in a large and complex institution. Activities will include: • Learning how to examine paintings, evaluate their condition, and prepare written condition documents • Learning about non-destructive analytical techniques • Gaining a general understanding of treatment materials and techniques • Performing minor treatments to gain hands-on experience and develop a portfolio • Gaining knowledge through selected readings and discussion The intern will also assist with various lab activities and daily gallery checks and will participate in the gallery-wide intern sessions planned by the education department. The intern’s activities will be closely supervised and mentored by department staff. The intern will also be asked to give a final presentation of their work to staff and other interns. The position is one and a half days per week—Friday mornings and one other 8-hour weekday—from September 9, 2019, through May 8, 2020 (35 weeks, 12 hours/week, 420 hours total). Stipend: $5,000, that is subject to all applicable taxes. The intern using an authorized public transportation method will receive an employer-provided fare subsidy to apply toward their monthly transit costs.
