Church News/Deseret News Student Internship – Winter 2020
The Deseret News is continuously looking for talented seasonal student intern writers and copy editors for the Church News (an official publication of the LDS Church), which provides news, and information for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The pay rate is $10 an hour, and interns are expected to work up to 40 hours/week.
- Internships typically start for winter/spring semester in January and end in April.
A minimum of 12 weeks is expected. Interns will work with their supervising editors to determine exact starting and ending dates, and weekly work schedules. If time off during the semester is needed, that must be coordinated well in advance with the supervising editor.
Deseret News Internship – News Division – Winter 2020
The News Division of the Deseret News is looking for a talented seasonal student intern reporter for the 2020 winter semester. This internship offers students a distinctive journalism experience unlike any other. The News Division is a unique newsroom where TV, radio, print and online reporters work together in an environment that provides news content for five different media platforms. This full-time internship for college students focuses on daily Utah news stories, projects and features for Deseret News, Deseret.com and KSL.com with occasional opportunities available for broadcast reporting for those interested. The four-month internship is a full-time paid position.
Students must have a car and are reimbursed for mileage. The internship provides invaluable experience for journalism and communications students.
Skills necessary
- Writing that is engaging, thoughtful, informative and rigorous
- Ability to work independently and be a self-starter
- Training in journalism or other writing experience involving critical/analytical thinking
- Knowledge of current events
- Ability to take regular feedback and work with editors in a professional environment
- Ability to write on deadline, following AP Style, and take assignments on short notice

Deseret News Internship – Opinion Section – Winter 2020
The Deseret News opinion team is continuously looking for talented seasonal student interns to assist in editing opinion content, writing op-eds and publishing opinion stories online.
We are especially interested in interns who have a background in editing. We prefer interns who have previously published opinion content or are familiar with editorial writing.
Internships are paid and are approximately three to four months (one semester) in duration. Internships for winter semester typically start in January and end in May.
Interns will work with their supervisor to determine exact starting and ending dates, as well as weekly work schedules. If time off during the semester is needed, that must be coordinated in advance with the supervisor.
Job expectations:
- Screen and edit guest commentaries and letters to the editor.
- Assist editors in scheduling opinion content for online publishing throughout the day.
- Work with editors to contribute content for the Deseret News National Edition.
- Write and publish thoughtful and engaging opinion pieces and opinion roundups as circumstances and experience allow.
Skills necessary:
- Advanced editing and writing abilities.
- A healthy grasp of local and national current events.
- Familiarity with AP style (a willingness to learn will also suffice).
- Ability to meet daily deadlines.
Deseret News Legislature Internship – News Division – Winter 2020
The News Division of the Deseret News is looking for a talented student intern reporter to help cover the Utah Legislature. This internship offers students a distinctive journalism experience unlike any other. Our legislative intern is a full-time member of our daily reporting team at the Utah State Capitol during the 45-day Legislative Session. Following the session, the intern joins the reporting staff in our News Division, a unique newsroom where TV, radio, print and online reporters work together in an environment that provides news content for five different media platforms. This full-time internship for college students focuses on daily Utah news stories, projects and features for Deseret News, Deseret.com and KSL.com with occasional opportunities available for broadcast reporting for those interested.
