Below are instructions for completing a design challenge. This challenge offers each applicant a fair and equal opportunity to demonstrate their skills. The challenge is a mandatory portion of the application.
CHALLENGE:
Design considerably affects a user’s perception of a product. For websites, it affects navigation, accessibility, and overall user satisfaction. At BYU’s Office of IT, we regularly re-design websites and apps for departments across campus using user testing data and design principles. This challenge will enable us to determine if you have the design skills necessary to complete tasks assigned regularly on our team.
You may be familiar with author Suzanne Collins – she’s famous for writing The Hunger Games. Her current website recently received an update, but you should be able to find some areas that need improvement.
Re-design the home page of Suzanne Collins’ website (http://www.suzannecollinsbooks.com/) using the following specifications:
- Use Adobe Illustrator and submit the design as an editable PDF file.
- Make sure any images you include are embedded, not linked. We also recommend that you convert your text to outlines to prevent any custom fonts from loading improperly on other computers.
- Design only the first screen (1430px wide by 1080px tall). No subsequent screens. No scrolling (it’s okay if the design is cut-off at the 1080px height and not all the content is displayed).
- You may use whatever content or images you find on the page or elsewhere on the web. You may choose any font or color for your design.
- Consider what information a visitor to the site would need/want to see first. You’re more than welcome to ask your friends what would be most important to them.
- Include a paragraph explaining your design choices. You can include your paragraph in the email text or within the design document.
We recommend that you don’t spend longer than 2 hours on this project.
All submissions are due by Friday, January 17 at 5:00 PM. Please email your design to uxoit@byu.edu with the subject title “UX/UI Team Design Challenge”. You may also use that email for any questions.
