The National Steinbeck Center offers internship possibilities to emerging museum, library, and non-profit professionals who are interested in the Center’s mission to build community and celebrate creativity, inspired by the words of John Steinbeck. Internships are all unpaid and offered during spring, summer, and fall. All potential applicants should have a basic knowledge of John Steinbeck, his contributions to literature, and the context of Salinas and its history to be considered.
Requirements for Applying
- Ages 18 or older
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate, graduate student, or recent grad at an accredited college or university
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, ability to follow directions and be able to stay on task to complete projects independently
Public Education Intern: Applicants for this project should be interested in teaching, public interpretation, and tours. The NSC is looking for an intern to conduct research in order to create a comprehensive, engaging, and educational tour for both public and school tours. Interns should be proactive in meeting with our current docent team and expand on best practices for tour interpretation. The intern will conduct research, assess the exhibit, compile lesson plans, and suggest structure for public tours or tours for different grade levels.
Photo Digitization Intern: Applicants for this project should be proficient at handling and processing archival photographs and records. Interns will be required to document, scan, digitize and create metadata for archival photos. Applicants should be able to perform quality assurance checks on files, and troubleshoot hardware and software issues. May include rehousing some items. Skills and knowledge in archival practices, history, photography, photo editing, and preservation are a plus.
Audio/Visual Digitization Intern: Applicants should be proficient and excel at digital media handling. Intern will digitize media such as recorded oral histories, videos in various formats, audio in various formats, and other various medias found in collection. Must be proficient in both Windows and iOS systems. Skills in video editing, sound editing, transcription, archival practices, or creating digital media from these sources is a plus.
Collections Intern: Applicants should be interested and willing to learn the basics of archive and collection management. Interns will assist in a collection-wide inventory which will include cataloging, assessing, rehousing, documenting and managing collection files. Interns should have an interest in history, preservation, archives, museums, and database management. Skills with managing large amounts of information and precise attention to detail is a plus.
