BIBLIOGRAPHIC DATABASE INTERN

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks an intern for summer 2021 to assist with research, testing, and administrative tasks relating to the MLA International Bibliography, the leading database for research in world languages and literatures, linguistics, film, folklore, and writing studies.

Reporting principally to the publisher of the MLA International Bibliography, the intern will search for and update information on publishers, journals, and authors; analyze and update MLA bibliographic data; and assist with usability and error testing on library platforms. The intern will also perform related work as needed and participate in conversations about indexing and metadata management.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills and be comfortable working with Microsoft Office. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in languages, literature, the humanities, or library and information studies.

The intern will work remotely with staff members and participate in regular video conferences, communicating with team members through e-mail, documents shared on Google Drive, and our online editorial system.

COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH INTERN

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a communications and outreach intern for summer 2021 to assist with communications, social media, advocacy, and marketing tasks for the MLA’s wide range of outreach and social media programming.

Reporting principally to the MLA’s director of outreach, the communications and outreach intern will assist staff members in the office of outreach with content creation and aggregation, social media management, landing-page optimization, list development and maintenance, and data analysis. The communications and outreach intern will also perform related work as needed, as well as participate in conversations about communications and marketing strategy.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills and be comfortable working with Microsoft Office and common social media platforms, such as FacebookTwitter, and LinkedIn. The preferred candidate would have some knowledge of graphic design using one or more of the more common graphic design programs, such as Adobe PhotoshopInDesign, or Illustrator. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in the humanities and nonprofit communications and marketing.

INDEXER INTERN, MLA INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks an intern for summer 2021 to assist with indexing, editing, and proofreading tasks related to production of the MLA International Bibliography, the premier database for research in world languages and literatures, linguistics, film, folklore, and writing studies.

Reporting principally to the editor of the MLA International Bibliography, the indexer intern will be trained to index scholarly publications in fields covered by the bibliography and to assist in maintaining records on periodical coverage. The indexer intern will also perform related work as needed and participate in conversations about indexing and metadata management.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills and have reading knowledge of at least one language other than English. Particular attention will be paid to candidates who are enrolled in or have completed an advanced degree in languages, literature, the humanities, or library and information science.

MARKETING AND DESIGN INTERN

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a marketing and design intern for summer 2021 to assist with digital marketing tasks for the MLA’s wide range of outreach and social media programming.

Reporting principally to the MLA’s director of outreach, the marketing and design intern will assist staff members in the office of outreach with content marketing (copy and design), landing-page optimization, pay-per-click marketing (Google AdWords), and data analysis (Google Analytics). The marketing and design intern will also work on list development and other related tasks as needed, as well as participate in conversations about creative vision and marketing strategy.

The preferred candidate would be adept at graphic design using one or more of the more common graphic design programs, such as Adobe PhotoshopInDesign, or Illustrator.

MEETINGS AND EVENTS INTERN

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a meetings and events intern for summer 2021 to assist with meeting strategy, research, analysis, and content generation related to the MLA Annual Convention and other MLA event programming.

Reporting principally to the MLA’s director of convention and events, the intern will assist staff members in the office of convention and events with analyzing data about convention attendance, researching potential convention locations and exhibitors, assisting with digital events, writing copy for MLA sites, and assisting with list maintenance. The intern will also perform related work as needed, as well as participate in conversations about event-planning and promotional strategy.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, research, and writing skills and be comfortable working with G Suite and Microsoft Office tools, including Excel. Experience with WordPress, online community engagement, or digital library infrastructure preferred. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in the humanities and nonprofit meeting planning.

PUBLISHING INTERN

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a summer 2021 intern to support its various digital publishing initiatives that support scholars, teachers, and students in the humanities.

Working principally with the MLA’s project manager for digital initiatives, the intern will assist staff members in the office of scholarly communication with content creation, play a role in supporting users through engagement, contribute to product and development meetings, participate in conversations about community engagement and social media strategy, and perform other related work as needed.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, and research skills; have an interest in humanities scholarship; and be comfortable using or learning to use WordPress and common social media platforms such as Twitter. An interest in digital publishing and platforms is a plus.

RESEARCH INTERN

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a research intern for summer 2021 to assist with research and other projects.

Reporting principally to the MLA’s executive director, the intern will assist staff members in the office of the executive director with a variety of projects. The intern will create, edit, and maintain databases of grant and funding opportunities supporting the association’s mission. In addition, the intern will assist with the creation of an electronic filing system for the association’s press coverage and other office files.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, proofreading, research, and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail is essential. Proficiency with Microsoft Word is required, and basic familiarity with data gathering and analysis techniques is a plus, as is familiarity with Microsoft Access and Excel. Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a demonstrated interest in the humanities and grant administration.

TECHNICAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT INTERN

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks a technical project management intern for summer 2021 to assist with project coordination and quality assurance.

Reporting principally to the MLA’s head of technical project management, the intern will assist staff members in the office of information systems with requirements gathering, project documentation, and software testing. The technical project management intern will also contribute to front-end development, learning and honing skills through work on the MLA’s content management systems and applications.

Candidates should possess basic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript knowledge, strong organizational and writing skills, and an interest in the humanities. Experience with content management systems such as WordPress or with Twig and PHP is a plus.

The technical project management intern will work remotely and will receive a $960 stipend every other week for the ten-week internship. This is a remote working position.
