Remote Internship: Research for Data and Creative Digital Publications

Job Summary: The Law Library of Congress seeks interns for creating visual data research and creative writing publications that will provide access to legal material on the Law Library of Congress website. Interns will work remotely and independently, in a mostly asynchronous setting. The project will focus on researching a topic of interest to create a dataset for a story map and write blog articles. Training will be provided. Finished projects will be reviewed for potential publication on the Law Library’s website.

Interns will be unpaid, but may use this position for volunteer hours or course credit, if applicable to their school’s requirements and prearranged with their sponsoring academic institution. Volunteers with similar education or experience are also encouraged to apply.

Requirements and Qualifications: Interns must have reliable Internet access such that they will be able to commit to working online for the summer. A passion for US history, legal history, and research/writing to share with others is important. There will be three optional presentations per week at 1pm (EST) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. While they are not mandatory, attendance is highly encouraged.

All higher education students and graduates are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to returning interns, those in library or law programs at the graduate level, and those who have completed such programs.

Application Process: Applicants will submit a résumé and a short cover letter to drd@loc.gov. The short cover letter should address what topics you are interested in (legal or nonlegal), as well as any experience in data research or writing creatively.

There will be two tracks of dates: The 12 week program will begin May 17th through the week of August 2nd and be expected to complete approximately 8 hours per week. The 9 week program will begin June 21st through the week of August 16th and be expected to complete approximately 11 hours per week. Please indicate which dates would best suit your needs. (The default/preferred dates will be the 12 week program.)

Important Dates: Applications for the summer program will be accepted now through April 26th. Decisions will first be made on April 5th and then on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

Stipend/Compensation: Unpaid/Volunteer

Citizenship Requirements: US citizenship not required

Applications Open To: All higher education students and graduates, especially in library science, political science/international relations/history, or law programs. Priority will be given to those seeking credit for school programs, especially those who have had disruptions in receiving credits due to complications of the current pandemic. Graduates, retirees, and those currently working in the library or legal field are encouraged to apply.
