Norton Professional Books
Norton Professional Books (NPB), a department of W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. focusing on mental health and education books, seeks an intern to assist the marketing and editorial staff remotely for a nine-week period. Our internship program provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing that includes mentorships with experienced Norton employees and networking within the intern class. Your work if you become an NPB intern may include the following:
- Researching market data
- As a publisher of books spanning a variety of topics within the mental health and education fields, NPB requires data and up-to-date information on niche markets. The intern will play an important role in helping the team gather information and data from online sources that we can use to inform marketing outreach.
- Media outreach and list-building
- The NPB Intern will help update and expand NPB’s media contact lists in order to broaden our outreach to editors, producers, readers, and reviewers for mailing and pitching purposes. There may also be opportunities for the intern to pitch new releases directly to outlets.
- Development of campaign material
- An intern with design skills can utilize their talents to create infographics, fliers, press releases, and other promotional graphics for our newest campaigns.
- Social media marketing support
- Assisting in social media to create posts and curate copy and graphic designs for our audience.
- Opportunities to work on editorial assignments
- Assist with proofreading, manuscript formatting, art maintenance, and provide general assistance to the editorial team as needed.

Our internship program provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing that includes mentorships with experienced Norton employees and networking within the intern class. Depending on the team you are working with, your work if you become a Norton intern may include the following:
- Researching market data
- Writing reader’s reports, drafting catalog copy, and creating and editing pitch letters
- Reading manuscripts, proposals, and proofs at various stages of publication to help editors and authors improve the quality of print and digital content
- Compiling materials and preparing manuscripts for reviews and production
- Maintaining lists and databases of key information such as digital content, media contacts, and book review programs
- Assisting in social media to create posts and curate copy and graphic designs for our audience
- Communicating with and providing support to publishers of different formats and editions including translations and audiobooks
College Marketing Remote Internship, Summer 2021
W. W. Norton is looking for interns to participate in our nine-week remote internship program. Our internship program provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing that includes mentorships with experienced Norton employees and networking within the intern class. Your work if you become a Norton intern with the College Marketing team may include the following:
Research, Marketing, and Development:
- Tag leads and create opportunities in Salesforce across all disciplines
- Research competitor titles and course markets
- Complete conversion guides for upper-level titles
- Create and update contact lists for new and existing course markets
- Research information, write copy, design, and copy-edit online quizzes for all disciplines that will appear on social media, ad emails, and newsletters
- Attend Norton hosted online workshops and write follow-up email template copy for professor outreach
Social media:
- Assist with brainstorming, writing, and posting copy
- Research trends, competitor accounts, and possible leads for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram
Design:
- Pitch design ideas for infographic projects and assist with designing graphics for social media
- Research data to assist with digital posters
Humanities Editorial Remote Internship, Summer 2021
W. W. Norton is looking for interns to participate in our nine-week remote internship program. Our internship program provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing that includes mentorships with experienced Norton employees and networking within the intern class. Your work if you become a Norton intern with one of the Humanities Editorial teams may include the following:
- Researching market data
- Writing reader’s reports, drafting catalog copy, and creating and editing pitch letters
- Reading manuscripts, proposals, and proofs at various stages of publication to help editors and authors improve the quality of print and digital content
- Compiling materials and preparing manuscripts for reviews and production
- Maintaining lists and databases of key information such as digital content, media contacts, and book review programs
- Communicating with and providing support to publishers of different formats and editions including translations and audiobooks
- Assisting in social media to create posts and curate copy and graphic designs for our audience
- Learning the basics of copyediting and proofreading

Custom Publications Remote Internship, Summer 2021
W. W. Norton is looking for interns to participate in our nine-week remote internship program. Our internship program provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing that includes mentorships with experienced Norton employees and networking within the intern class. Your work if you become a Norton intern with the Custom Publications team may include the following:
- Writing abstracts for new reading selections we add to the Norton Custom Library, our print-on-demand branch.
- Proofing custom covers and tables of contents for new custom books.
- Proofreading materials for new custom books, particularly ‘original material’ provided by a school to be added to their specific custom book.
- Helping proofread full manuscript passes of complex custom print books and eBooks.
- Helping put together surveys, handouts, marketing materials, and similar materials.
- Obtaining permissions copies and helping with permissions research for new reading selections to be added to new custom books.
- Checking books for permissions issues, including monitoring sales and usage information.
- Helping monitor inventory and reprints.
- Helping test our digital landing pages for new custom digital landing pages (DLPs).
- Helping manage databases and track information.
